What is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a special time each week that’s just for you. You spend time with your play therapist and choose what you’d like to do. There are lots of creative things you can use - like art materials, clay, music, books, Lego, outdoor play and many other toys. You can create and explore, or just rest and hang out in a safe place.
Big feelings can be like dark clouds in the sky. They can roll in and cover up the sunshine, making everything feel a bit grey and stormy inside. Together in play therapy, we can create a gentle wind that helps those clouds to move along - so little by little, the sun can shine through again.
Sometimes children come to play therapy because something tricky is happening in their life, or because they’ve been feeling strong feelings like worry, sadness, or anger. Adults might have noticed that things are a bit harder for you right now. In play therapy, you don’t have to talk about anything unless you want to - just playing can help you start to feel better.
You are free to tell people about what happens in play therapy if you choose to, but your play therapist will not tell anyone what you do or say in your sessions unless she thinks you or someone else is not safe.
